Your Housing Assignment is released.
Around mid-July, you will receive an email to notify you of the housing allocation. You have to go to your Housing portal > move in >ready to check-in to check your room allocation. You will know which residence hall, floor & room you have been assigned. If you are participating in BGRi then you will be assigned a move-in time on the day before BGR starts. Check what date and time you have been allocated.
Regarding your room, there will most definitely be two desks & chairs- one for you and one for your room-mate. No need for desk lamps, they come built in to the desk. You both will get a dresser and a closet each. The size of the closet, and whether it will have a door or not, will depend on which hall you have been allocated. The room will also come with a trash can and the beds/mattresses. You will need to bring your own linen/pillows and comforter.
Update your Medical insurance Address details
In case you used PUSH Centre for your insurance address when purchasing it, you can now change your address for health insurance by editing your profile on both UH and AHP online accounts after logging in to the new one after being assigned your dorm.
Get the layout & size of your room (if you will need it)
Each dorm has layouts of their typical rooms on the Purdue housing website. Most dorm rooms in that dorm will have those same dimensions. But your room may not be standard, and especially in older buildings like Windsor or Cary, rooms can greatly differ. If you need the exact dimensions- maybe you want to buy a carpet to cover the room floor or you want to know the size of your bed and whether or not you can adjust it to be higher (see my post Decide on Lofting Your Bed)- you can email the front desk/general info email for your hall (you can find it online) and ask for the specific layout/blueprint for your room number.
If you need to change your allocated date of move-in
If you want to move in early you can contact :
- The Housing Office over email while you are still at home and request them for an early check in. They are normally quite flexible with such requests. However be sure to indicate that you are willing to pay the extra $35 per day (or whatever the current fee is)- otherwise your request will be rejected. This fee is for accommodation only. Meals for any early check-ins are not included
- If you have requested an early move-in date, and you don’t have a confirmation then make cancellable hotel bookings at a nearby hotel so in case they can’t allocate the room then the student is not stranded. See Book Your Hotel
- If you had not requested an early move-in date, you can still approach the Front desk at your Residence Hall even after you arrive in August. Its generally staffed by students and they have the discretion to grant you an early move-in time/date without involving the central Housing Office. This is what we did when we went there. You will still need to pay the per day fee though.
If you are not happy with your allocated room
If you don’t feel your room assignment is the best fit for you, you will be able to request a room change prior to move-in (this year its beginning July 18 and up until August 4) in your housing portal. The chances of these are pretty slim as there are not enough rooms to go around. Make sure you have a legitimate reason (non-AC, affordability etc) about getting moved. Feel free to give them Housing 765-494-1000 a call if you haven’t heard back within the promised timelines. If you aren’t able to switch immediately, you can submit a room change form at the end of the first semester as some people are on campus for one semester only due to graduation, study abroad, co-op, etc. However, this isn’t guaranteed either.
As I wrote earlier on my post on First Year Housing, you should take this decision in the right spirit. Kicking up a fuss and fretting over it will not help, rather you should try and focus on the positives of the Purdue experience.
Other FAQs about your room assignment
I’m in this Learning Community so why am I in a different dorm from the rest of my LC?
Two main reasons – the LC was relocated or they have it in multiple dorms. However, as far as I know, if you’re in a LC, you’ll still be living with other LC members and have a LC RA. If you feel that they have made a mistake, then do contact Housing
I’m in a non-AC dorm. Will I die?
No, you’ll be fine. Literally hundreds of thousands of students have lived in Purdue’s non-AC dorms throughout the years. Purdue is hot for shout the first 4-5 weeks of the fall semester and last 3 weeks of the spring semester. Head to Walmart and get yourself some fans (including box fans for your window). All dorms have (the much more important) heat for the winter.
What type of bathroom will I have?
Most of the dorms have communal bathrooms. They consist of several toilets, sinks, and showers. They’re cleaned everyday. Make sure to invest in some shower shoes. The second most common bathroom is a semi-private meaning you and possibly one other room is sharing a bathroom. This usually consists of one sink, one toilet, one shower. Semi-private and private bathrooms get cleaned once a week.
Important Points & Rules about housing
This is not an exhaustive list- you can get that from the housing website. I have tried to summarise the most important ones:
Keys: You will get just one key. Keep it safe. If you lose it, they will replace the entire lock and charge you $75 for a replacement.
Quiet Hours: Sunday – Thursday: 10 p.m. – 8 a.m.; Friday – Saturday: 12 a.m. – 10 a.m. During final examination periods, 24-hour quiet periods are in effect.
Something Broken?: if you have any maintenance issues at dorm report it here. There is no charge for routine repairs.
Photocopy/Printing: Residence halls do not offer copy capabilities. Most residence halls do have computer stations with print capabilities and may have scan-to-email capability as well. Please check with your residence hall’s front office for details
Cleaning: Students are responsible for the cleaning and care of their assigned room. Students may check out vacuum cleaners, dust mops and other cleaning tools at most locations. University Residences’ service staff clean and maintain all common areas of residence halls, including lounges, hallways, study rooms and bathrooms.
Length of contract and breaks: A typical University Residences contract is for the academic year beginning on a date in mid-August and terminating on a date in early May, Students may stay in their assigned space over winter break for an additional fee of $35 a day (excluding meals). Students are able to remain in their room at no additional charge for all other breaks (fall, Thanksgiving, spring). However, meal service is not available in campus dining facilities during these break periods. Purdue offers The Host-A-Boiler program for international students who cannot go home for holidays, esp since residence hall dining is closed Wed through Sunday of Thanksgiving week — volunteer hosts are families, faculty/ staff who live in Greater Lafayette
Laundry: There is a laundry room in every residence hall. Rates differ per dorm- see here. You pay using new CSCPay Mobile laundry app for washing and drying your laundry or pay for someone else to it through Laundry chute.
Modifications: No modifications including drilling/sawing/painting/use of screws, nails, glue allowed.
Smoking, Drinking & Drugs: All University Residences are non-smoking (as is the campus, except for designated smoking areas). Vaping is not allowed either. Alcohol is illegal for under-21s under Indiana state law and anyone found with alcohol in their dorms will face legal consequences. The U.S. Department of State recently revved up its anti-drunk driving policy. Consulates are now instructed to automatically revoke the visas of foreign nationals who had Driving Under Influence (DUI) or DWI offenses after the visa holders had already arrived in the United States. Consumption of alcohol or illicit drugs inside the dorm will result in judicial proceedings according to the Housing guidelines.
Illegal acts: Gambling, possession of a weapon, discharging fire extinguishers when there is no fire, propping doors open that should be closed or locked, removing screens from windows, or any form of vandalism may result in judicial proceedings.
Prohibited items: Items prohibited from University Residences buildings and grounds due to safety or fire hazard concerns include but are not limited to; the use and/or storage of candles and incense, fireworks, electric/battery or gasoline motorized cycles, scooters, hover boards, electric blankets or electric bed warmers of any kind, “grow lights”, halogen lamps, portable heating units & portable air conditioning units; non-certified Extension cords, power strips and charging devices. Bicycles, rollerblades, roller skates, and skateboards etc may not be ridden through doors, into the lobby, or down hallways.
