Climate & Winter Clothing

West Lafayette has a humid continental climate characterized by warm to hot summers, freezing cold winters and highly variable rainfall. You will want to pack for living in a locale that has four distinct seasons. The weather in the Greater Lafayette area can change rapidly and often. Without a doubt, you will hear someone say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.” Be sure to consider this when deciding what you might need during your arrival and stay at Purdue.

When we were at BGRi during 2023, there was plenty of rainfall and it was Tornado season. I remember being with my son at JCPenney at Tippecanoe shopping mall. The Tornado warning was scary. All the mobiles of every shopper including mine went off blaring in our pockets at the same time with a National tornado warning alert. Then the shop staff requested everyone to leave the floor and to either take shelter inside their changing rooms or leave the shop. We were led inside the changing rooms, crammed 10 people per room, and only allowed out after 45 mins. Luckily, the tornado missed the town.
